The best moment for the mating , which invariably should take place in the male's territory to avoid problems of libido and/ or excessive domain of the female, is located between the third and fourth day of the female heat cycle, in other words, between the first and second day of the estrus.
In the case of programmed matings, it is advisable to take the following precautions:

- Trim their claws, both male and female.
- Make sure that the couple is perfectly healthy, free of parasites and with the vaccinations card perfectly updated.
- Prepare them in a closed and calm place, provided with the indispensable elements to stay some days (a litter box, fresh water and food bowls and a bed), but without any other element where the female may hide oneself.

During the couple's introduction, it is very possible that initially the female cat shows a hostile reaction before the male, really understandable considering the environment and the partner novelt. Meanwhile, the male quickly tries to determine which is her degree of sexual receptivity by means of a sniffing of her genital area and/ or her urine. This prelude can get longer for some hours until gradually the female goes familiarizing with the new situation and she allows the male's approach.

Resolved the introductions, the male will approach the female laterally, grabbing her with the teeth for the neck and, in this position, he will quick mate her (copulations lasts only few seconds) helped by the lordosis posture that adopts the female in this circumstance. In the mating moment, the female emits an intense and characteristic screech or calling that announces the attainment of the coitus.
Once finished the mating, the male retires himself quickly and stays at a prudential distance of the female to avoid her later reaction, that uses to be quite aggressive. At this time, it is also frequent that the female rolls around herself on the floor and she licks her genital area obsessively.

| During this whole time, the male will remain patiently to the expectation of the female, but far from his reach, until she doesn't show a more receptive attitude to a new mating. The copulations repeat cyclically with an approximate frequency of one or twice by hour or one an a half hour. It is advisable to prolong this situation during 2 or 3 days to assure the ovulation and fecundation of the female.

After the mating, the female doesn't lose the heat symptoms immediately, but rather she maintains the behaviour and the sexual receptivity for a few days more, so she could mating with other available males.
Keep in mind that the inexperienced female cats can reject the first intents of mating, especially if the male is also beginner. On the other hand, as much the male as the female, they usually show strong personal preferences for their couple, thing that can also suppose a reason of failure of a mating programmed by their owners.
